Waiting

Sketch a day - Day 106/365

So much of our lives in public spaces are now about not being present, but being elsewhere. It's so weird. When you stop and notice. I don't say this as a criticism. If I am not sketching people at train stations, I am generally on my own phone, scrolling too. But when I do notice, what I see is stuck people, stuck on our phones. The word that always comes up in my head is lonely. Being connected doesn't seem to lead to connection. I dunno, it just makes me sad. I don't think being somewhere else instead of being in the here and now is making any of us particularly happy.

After I sketched this guy on his phone, over on the platform opposite me, I sketched a girl who was also on her phone. Halfway through she looked up and noticed me sketching her. We looked at each other. My sketch went horribly wrong. And then she went back to scrolling, leaving me to try and fix the mess I made (it didn't work, trust me you don't need to see it). It was almost a real life encounter.

And that's the news.
